Golden Retriever Presents His Owner With A Young Koala that he Has Recently Rescued

The most wonderful scene occurred in Australia, proving once again that golden retrievers have the greatest hearts!

Kerry McKinnon of Strathdownie in Western Victoria is the delighted owner of a golden retriever named Asha, and he just planned the biggest surprise of her life by bringing home a newborn koala!

Temperatures in the Victoria region can dip to 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit), which can be extremely hazardous to animals without thick fur coats.

“It was early in the morning, and my husband shouted out to me to come look at something,” Kerry (45) recounts in an interview with “At first, I didn’t understand what he was saying, but then I noticed this small baby koala nestled on top of Asha. I couldn’t stop giggling. Asha didn’t sure what to think; she just stared at me with a puzzled expression.

“She kept staring back at the koala bear, but she wasn’t attempting to pull him off her. She was content to let him snuggle into her,” she recalls.

It’s still unknown how the koala wound up on Asha. It was most likely caused by the infant koala being separated from its mother when it was still young enough to live with her.

“I believe the koala bear cub fell out of his mother’s pouch and was unsure what to do. He’d walk over to our back patio, observe the dogs on their beds, and then opt to cuddle in Asha’s hair because it’s nice and warm.”

Fortunately, the newborn koala bear landed up in very safe hands (or should I say paws). “Asha undoubtedly saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. He would have perished if he had been left alone all night. The poor creature may have been been kidnapped by a fox or something.”

After being examined by a local veterinarian, a local koala caregiver took the infant under their care until it could be released back into the wild.
